AT A GLANCE:

“AI can never replace the human heart, moral values, critical thinking skills, and respect for the rule of law.”

In this day and age, artificial intelligence (AI) has been a quick and reliable source of information for our daily legal queries. Just type in any legal query on the internet or computer app, and you’ll get your quick fix in a matter of seconds.

However, during the 85th Commencement Exercise of the Arellano University School of Law, Associate Justice Mario V. Lopez reminded the law graduates that AI is “a mere tool for human utilization and not intended to replace humans, especially in the legal profession as it has no deep understanding of abstract concepts like justice, equity, compassion, and good conscience.”

This is because AI does not have the capacity to decide cases with fairness and integrity, which requires, not only logic, but also a conscience and a sense of societal responsibility in the dispensation of ultimate justice. Although AI may be resorted to for urgent and simple legal concerns, it does not really completely address underlying issues to provide  a holistic solution to various legal inquiries.

“It is our humanity that renders us indispensable in the practice of law. We are humans guided by conscience and societal responsibility in the dispensation of ultimate justice.”

In this regard, Associate Justice Lopez reiterated to the soon-to-be lawyers to be mindful and responsible in using social media and to follow the new Code of Professional Responsibility and Accountability.

“AI can never replace the human heart, moral values, critical thinking skills, and respect for the rule of law.”
