AT A GLANCE:

Every second week of October of every year is National Mental Health Week. (Proclamation No. 452, s. 1994)

The law says:

DECLARING THE SECOND WEEK OF OCTOBER OF EVERY YEAR AS NATIONAL MENTAL HEALTH WEEK

WHEREAS, Proclamation No. 432, dated August 12, 1957, declared every third week of January as National Mental Health Week;

WHEREAS, the First World Mental Health Day’s celebration has triggered more active international communications, which lead to a stronger cooperation worldwide among the participating organizations;

WHEREAS, a synchronized worldwide celebration will get more public attention and support for mental health work; and

WHEREAS, it has become expedient to be more in accord with the celebration of the World Mental Health Day to change the date of celebration of the National Mental Health week. (Proclamation No. 452, s. 1994)

“Mental health is defined as a state of well-being in which people understand their abilities, solve everyday life problems, work well, and make a significant contribution to the lives of their communities.” (The World health report: 2004: changing history. [Mar;2020 ];https://www.who.int/whr/2004/en/ World Health Organization. 2004)

With mental health emerging as a pressing public concern, the observance of National Mental Health Week takes on a significant role in spreading awareness, particularly regarding mental health issues. This week-long event provides a substantial platform for emphasizing the importance of tending to one’s mental well-being, which is just as vital as safeguarding one’s physical health.

This year, both governmental and non-governmental entities are actively participating in this meaningful celebration, aligning with the global observance of World Mental Health Day on October 10, 2023. The preparations for this event are geared towards amplifying awareness, combating stigma, and championing mental health services. This includes the organization of seminars, with a specific focus on suicide prevention and intervention.
